What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a short Markdown file at the root of a website that tells AI assistants what the site is about and which pages matter most. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024. It starts with a # title and a > one-line summary, then lists key pages as links under ## sections.

llms.txt was proposed in September 2024 as a standard way to give language models a concise guide to a website.
No special file
Google says no special files or markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; normal SEO foundations apply.
How we check
We request /llms.txt over HTTPS and only accept a text response, since many sites answer every address with their home page. The file is parsed with the rules in the llmstxt.org proposal. Drafts are built from your home page title and description and the pages in your XML sitemap, grouped by the first part of each URL path.

Do ChatGPT and Google use llms.txt?
No major engine has confirmed it uses llms.txt for ranking or citations yet. AI coding and research assistants do read it, and it costs little to publish.
Where does the file go?
At the root of your domain, served as plain text: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. An optional llms-full.txt can hold the full text of your key pages.
Is llms.txt a replacement for robots.txt or a sitemap?
No. robots.txt controls access, the sitemap lists every page for search engines, and llms.txt is a short, curated guide for AI assistants.
Why does the checker say my file is missing when the URL loads?
Many sites answer every address with their home page. If /llms.txt returns an HTML page rather than a text file, it doesn’t count.
How do I make an llms.txt file for free?
